Lighting…

It’s no secret that one of the keys to photography is light, especially when it comes to portraits. Getting the correct lighting is often the difference between a great shot that beautifully accentuates the subject and one that no one will notice.

With that in mind, where do think this portrait was taken and what was the source of light? Was it in a controlled studio with carefully arranged artificial lighting? Not even close.

It was actually shot with my daughter Kate standing just inside an open exterior doorway facing the natural outdoor light on a cloudy afternoon. Behind the doorway was a darkened room which gives us this great contrast that really pops in black and white.

Other than a little post processing to convert the image to black and white and slightly enhance the contrast, this is the image as it came out of the camera. Sometimes all you need is a beautiful subject, a good camera, and God’s natural light to capture a great portrait.
