Finding Beauty… Answer

When my daughter Kate was first getting into photography, she was always stopping to take close-up pictures of flowers. This never used to interest me much, but over time she changed my perspective to the point where now I frequently find myself looking for good flower photo opportunities. Obviously flowers are beautiful from a distance, but it seems like there are so many new, beautiful nuances that open up when you get in really close.

Earlier this week I posted the photo above asking where people thought it might have been taken. There were 14 total guesses, and I appreciate all the responses. The most popular guess was “Cheekwood,” which is a botanical garden in Nashville, and was suggested by 10 followers. One person guessed “Biltmore,” where they have a beautiful tulip garden. Someone even suggested it was at my house (I wish).

It was actually taken in the middle of the parking lot of the Airport Renaissance Hotel in St. Louis. I was waiting to load the bus on a field trip with my daughter Sara, when I spotted these tulips in a small bed. I took the shot just a few feet from the bus (I was crouched down, so got a good whiff of the exhaust). I was not carrying the ideal lens for a macro flower shot, but it seemed to turn out okay anyway. It had rained that morning, and the beads of water perfectly accentuated the amazing colors in these beautiful flowers. This picture reminds me that there is beauty to be found almost anywhere if we just keep our eyes open.
